Maat Warns of a Governmental Attack on Human Rights Organizations and Calls upon Wazeer to Retract his Decision to Close the Legal Assistance Association.

Maat center observed the decision of Cairo governor, Abd El Azeem Wazeer, to close the Legal Assistance Human Rights Association with pretext that it committed financial violations in the era of its previous board of directors between 2003 and 2005. This matter raised doubts around these so called violations, regarding that ignoring these violations is a crime required judging those who are responsible for the administrative body concerning supervising associations under law N.84 of 2002.

Maat center asserts that the governor decision, which time is studied and chosen carefully, as this decision came after the association confirms its role in enhancing detention and torture victims, and after the association’s effective activity in more than judicial filed, the matter which the ordinary man feels. In addition, this decision came after similar another one, issued form Social Solidarity Ministry few months ago, to close the Institution of Syndicates and Workers Services which cared for a wide class of workers and privatization victims.

The most danger question is raised, after this decision, about the fate of other organizations which has activity similar to that of the Assistance Association, specially as there are strong news about new amendments of law N.84 of 2002 by which the government aimed at limit the work of the social organizations in Egypt. These amendments are stated to be discussed in the coming parliament circle.

It is worth to mention that the governor decision came illegally because the administrative body ignored answering on the violation notes presented by the association during the legal period stated by law, which is just ten days. Maat wanders is this decision carries a larger hidden meaning represented in prohibit providing legal protection to those who demand it, of the security violations’ victims which reached its utmost during last months parallel with a large role of the legal assistance in confronting it and chasing those who are accused in it of police men!!

Or the hidden meaning of the decision represented in the trying to defame the reputation of those who lead judicial organizations by accusing them of money violations, or by accusing them of having foreign finances without proofing these violations in any judicial neutral investigations.

The center sees that the decision of closing the Legal Assistance Association represents an aggression on civilians’ right to organize and form associations, and asserted the government’s systematic in persecuting judicial organizations which are effective in serving the main issues of the Egyptian people. This is accompanied with the raise of torture and detention issues as the most dangerous security crimes the state witnessed during quarter a century of Martial Law. The crimes are predicted to increase after constitutionalize Marital Law and after the forthcoming passing of the challenging terrorism law perliamentally…

Maat center demand the governor to retract the decision to close the association, and to form a neutral committee to insure the existence of those violations and to answer notes presented by the association.
