Security Body Detains Members of People's Assembly.

Where is The Parliament's Immunity?

 30/04/2007

At the moments when People's Assembly is issuing the law of Terrorism Challenging after it became constitutional in the amendments of the Egyptian constitution, article N. 179 and was certified in the referendum on 26 March 2007, the security bodies detain members of parliament.

Security bodies' forces of investigation in El Monofia governorate detained two members of People's Assembly (Ragab Abo Zeed &Wagdy Amaar) with fourteen civilians; the arresting of the members of People's Assembly did not follow the legal procedures which have to be followed in cases of arresting a member of People's Assembly, such as remove the immunity or to be red-handed.

Is the immunity given to special members?  If members of People's Assembly will be deprive from their right to meet their voters and people?

The arresting of the two People's Assembly members comes in the frame work of the campaign lunched by Ministry of Interior against the Muslim Brothers party and its men and deputies, at the same time when the National Party prepared for the middle renew elections of People's Assembly, and for local elections in 2008, and the campaign comes after the Muslim Brothers gained 88 seats in the last parliament elections.

The center confirmed that the event represents violation of rights and freedoms, one of them is the right to collect and show opinion which is provided by the Egyptian constitution and the international charters certified by Egypt and became a part of the inner legislation. These charters are the state pretext to issue a new law to challenge terrorism in order to execute its international commitments. We call for the government to execute the other commitments and to keep rights and freedoms and respect human rights.
